In Beijing’s 798 art district, the artist Hai Rong (海容 Hǎi Róng) finished a 10 day public display of nude women in cages. From October 5 to 15, women would “go to work” by stripping naked and entering the cages from 9 a.m. to noon, when they would take a lunch break, and then get back in from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. When news hit the Chinese Internet, many commenters said the exhibit has more to do with sex than art.

The artist Hai Rong said, “The physical element has always been my form of expression… When (they are) nude, I can see people thinking more deeply on the status of women…

“90% of women think that women can do better, can become independent, while the majority of men believe that this is impossible.”

Paramilitary police used over 100 bullet-proof vehicles in a village raid:

“On October 9th’s night mission, which lasted into early the next morning, the Beihai Police took a unified raid on criminal gangsters located at five different locations in Hepu County; after this, on October 15, the Police arrested another suspect, took over one car and one computer. So far, the special case of Beihai’s “9.18″ crime raid has arrested 37 suspects including —– and —–.”

The suspects’ names were given as “Yang so-and-so and Yang so-and-so,” because police would not give their real names. The raid first began on September 18, well known to Chinese readers as the official date of the 1931 Japanese invasion, a day still marked each year with air raid sirens.

“In a hundred years, one American financial crisis has caused a financial storm for the whole world, the characteristics of which are very bad; maybe next year it will be worse. It appears the whole world must pay for the American financial crisis, bailing them out, otherwise everybody will fall together. In this kind of critical state, China’s attitude and methods have become the whole world’s, especially America’s and the Western media’s, focus for public opinion.

“The whole world is revising its view of China’s economic strength.”

After recent appearances of Superman and a deer, someone wrapped in white gauze boarded Shanghai’s subway system:

“The ‘mummy’ from time to time would greet passengers, and even tried to shake hands, and a female passenger made a scared face, shouting ‘go away soon, too scary!’”

Readers of the story began to “question the conduct of this art,” thinking this might be the same person who dressed up as a deer and Superman.

A girl destroyed 6,550 yuan worth of goods in a Changchun KTV room.

“After the police arrived, Xiao Li still hadn’t changed a bit, to the police she charged the waiters with being discourteous to her. The police urged Xiao Li to put on a shirt, but Xiao Li didn’t listen to them, still cursing out the police. Xiao Li called some of her female classmates, but after her classmates came, not only did they not mitigate the problem, they also joined in cursing out the cops, and no matter how much the cops tried to shut them up, they just wouldn’t listen.”

The girl caused trouble for more than three hours. Among other things, she threw an ashtray at the karaoke screen. When her boyfriend’s mother came, the woman fainted, and staff had to place a “120″ rescue call.

A few days ago, Changchun’s 2nd District People’s Court found her guilty of intentional damage to property. She was sentenced to four months imprisonment.
