Wow, they lay their hands on the guy. This can be considered assault. I am not saying that the law needs to called but the guy has a right to run or punch the guy in the face, the woman too :P for grabbing him like that.

For Steve,
I had written a post on my travel blog when I was in Tianshui (http://www.silkroadtraveller.com/wordpress).
My impression was that it's a much smaller city than the usual chinese standards. The air was quite fresh, which I welcomed gladly after stuffy Beijing or Xi'an. In itself the city doesn't have much to offer, but I really had a nice time (or what you can experience in only 2 days...) because it seamed to me that everyone was just so nice! Friendly, smilly, helpful, ... And quite small so you don't suffocate...
I don't really about the city and living there, but I had a good time there.

This is why I carry Pepper Spray with me. Every time you deal with Chinese they will try to cheat you in some way.

He asked for 50 and they put 100.. he thought he was being cheated "AGAIN" he should have phoned someone who spoke English and Chinese.

I put forward a warning to all foreigners if you deal with Chinese you will get ripped off, scammed or screwed. Unless its a Foreign controlled (Taiwanese, Japan, Korea, USA and the like) you will negotiate with them and they will find a way to fuck up the product so they can save an extra 1 RMB and make it less quality.

Everything needs to be scrutinized. These people's only religion is money. They think cheating each other and foriegners is a game and a Joke.

Chinese products are horrible and they cannot be trusted.. So this person thinking he's getting screwed is accurate. You must assume they are trying to cheat you first and then ask questions later.

Always carry pepper spray or mace with you.. Spray first and ask questions later if they start pulling or tugging on you.

And they will pickpocket and rob you any chance they get so always keep two wallets on you, one with a few $ in it and some expired id's and credit cards and another smaller one with the real deal.

CHINA Is one BIG SCAMMMMMMMMM so be careful!

I should correct that... I know it's one of the many cities with a population in the low millions. Changsha, for instance, is around double its population (I've lived there)... but I have the impression that as you go further west, population alone might not indicate how rural the place feels, and what the character of the town is in general. Well, hope to hear your thoughts.

Funny you mention Tianshui... I've looked at a job offer there but balked for now. If you check back, I'd be interested in what you thought of the place. My impression is that it is very, very small, but I don't know much about the culture or the quality and pace of daily life there. Hope you enjoyed it.

Hilarious!
I can see myself in this situation in my travels in China. Today I was on the train to Tianshui, Gansu, and suddenly the whole wagon decided to discuss about me and the fact that I am French and etc for half an hour... But my chinese isn't that good so I just had to smile when people were coming to yell something to me in chinese while smiling... quite something!
